Master and framework planning
Both planning instruments are essential building blocks for the formulation of long-term development strategies. These interdisciplinary plans make it possible to clearly communicate needs and drive structural developments forward in a targeted manner. Scientific methods are applied and data analysed in order to develop recommendations for action.

International architectural competitions
Architectural competitions are an important tool for promoting architectural culture. They encourage innovation, define quality standards and raise public awareness of the zoo's architectural culture. The Institute's participation in international competition juries underlines the importance of architectural expertise.

Conservation of monuments and inventory
The Institute is involved in the conservation of historically valuable buildings within the zoological gardens. It contributes to the preservation and maintenance of these buildings through architectural analyses and architectural history studies. The aim is to record and document the buildings and their context within the zoo.

Publication series and research
The Institute's publications are a contribution to the academic debate on zoo architecture. They document the history of zoo architects, zoos and aquariums in order to preserve this knowledge for future generations. The Institute’s research work contributes to the digitisation and completion of zoo archives.

Policy advice
The Institute plans to become more active in the political arena in the coming years in order to raise awareness among stakeholders, multipliers and decision-makers. To this end, the Institute will hold discussions with stakeholders. Topics will range from animal rights and factory farming to healthy eating.
